GMC Supporting Information for Appraisal & Revalidation

9 April 2018

In 2018-19, we have entered the second cycle of revalidation and the GMC have produced new guidance on Supporting information for appraisal and revalidation (April 2018):

GMC Guidance on Supporting Information for Appraisal and Revalidation

It is an easy read, in plain English and the four overarching principles and six types of supporting information remain the same (with some elements of clarification).

There has been a shift in emphasis to strengthen the requirements around declaring the whole scope of practice, including a requirement to make the RO and appraiser aware of every place of work and employer, which will impact on locum GPs in particular.

There is clarity that whole practice appraisal for revalidation should be supportive and developmental - which fits well with the ethos of the Wessex Appraisal Service.

Finally, you should think QUALITY of supporting information over QUANTITY, focusing on demonstrating the impact of learning on quality of practice and improvements in patient care. But you were all doing that anyway…

We have reviewed the guidance on our website here:  Wessex Appraisal Service review of new GMC Guidance on Supporting Information for Appraisal & Revalidation
